In 1938 London, Gertie Bingham's beloved husband Harry has passed away, leaving their shared dream of Bingham Books in turmoil. As Gertie contemplates retirement by the seaside with her loyal lab, Hemingway, fate intervenes. With Hitler's rise in Germany, Jewish families send their children away, and Gertie, encouraged by her friend Charles, takes in headstrong teenager Hedy. Together, they face the looming threat of war, and amidst the Blitz, they start an air raid book club. Despite unimaginable losses, their bond and love for books help them endure the darkest days of the war.
