Second in the series of The Hardy Boys detective/adventure series, The House on the Cliff continues the exciting adventures of two young budding detectives in this wildly popular series. Frank and Joe Hardy, sons of the world renowned detective Fenton Hardy, investigate a mysterious old house high on the cliffs above Barmet Bay when they are frightened off by a scream. During a storm they seek refuge in the house, only to return to their motorcycles now empty tool boxes! The boys return to the apparently haunted house when they make a connection between the place and a smuggling case their father is working on. When their father goes missing, they have to investigate the caves beneath the house and confront the smugglers face to face.
1970s, Southern Alabama. Sixty-two-year-old Jeremiah Lewis Taylor, or Nub, has spent his whole life listening to those he loves tell him he's no good -- first his ex-wife, now his always-disapproving daughter. When he and fifteen-year-old Waffle House waitress Minnie form an unlikely friendship, he realizes for the first time that there may be some good in him after all. Minnie has been dealt a full deck of bad luck. Gradually, Nub realizes the gift he's been given: a second chance to make a difference.

By checking out a monitor with your library card, you can easily evaluate the radon levels in your living spaces, and determine if you are in danger. Radon kills nearly 21,000 people each year, more than 800 of them in Georgia. Radon can affect any home, regardless of construction or age. If found, radon can be fixed by installing a radon mitigation system.
Radon is the second leading cause of lung cancer behind smoking and is the leading cause of lung cancer in non-smokers. It occurs naturally when uranium breaks down to form radon. Uranium is often found in high concentrations in granite rocky soils, as are common in northern Georgia counties. As radon is released into the soil, it can enter buildings through the foundation and well water, eventually building to dangerous levels.
Each radon kit contains two QR codes: one leads to an instructional video, while the other directs you to a website to submit your results. When you report your findings to the UGA Extension, the data will be used in scientific research and to raise awareness of radon levels in Georgia.
Watch this video about checking out a Radon kit from your library.
The PINES student PLAY card gives all Walton County students a special library card using their student ID with no late fees. These PLAY cards are funded by a generous grant from Georgia Public Library Service. Find out more here!
